The Craftsmen Style homes were a revolution in American architectural design and were constructed all over the nation from 1905 and 1930. The Craftsmen Style, also known as the Arts and Crafts Style, the Western Stick Style, and the Crafts Movement Style, was based on the Arts and Crafts movement in Europe lead by English architect William Morris (1834-1896) and the English Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society formed in 1888.
About one-third of the Craftsmen style homes have a front-gabled roof. Porches, which may either be of full- or partial-width, and are almost evenly divided between those sheltered beneath the main roof and those with separate, extended roofs. Columns for supporting the porch roofs are a distinctive and variable detail. Typically short, square upper columns rest upon more massive piers, or upon a solid porch balustrade.
Some other features that you will certainly find in a craftsmen style homes are: decorative braces, wide overhanging eaves, heavy use of wood for building home and furniture, cross-members and beams usually exposed inside the home, huge front porch, cross gabled and low pitched roofs. Almost all of the raw materials used during construction (internal and external) are available locally. Wood that is locally available is used for the home construction, and used internally for staircases, cupboards, furniture, beds, and cabinets.
The furniture of Craftsmen style homes is relatively simple and less elaborate. The furniture is handmade, signifying the artistic and creative skills of the architect or creator. The fireplace is in the living room and usually made of brick and tiles, and framed with symmetric benches or bookshelves. Natural materials play a big role in the Craftsman style, with local stone lining fireplaces or local woods being used for decorative accents.
Many people are shifting from their apartments into Craftsmen style home. It's simple design and exotic features can lure or attract anybody towards it.
